Edit Function Grayed Out in Word

I am using Microsoft Office 365 Word application, Version 14.4.7, running on a MacBook Air, with OS X 10.10.1.  Recently I have found that the Copy function in Word no longer functions.  It is grayed out on the Edit Tab of the word toolbar, and Ctr-C no longer works as well.   I have seen this problem referenced in some outside user groups.
